TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
Barter Theatre (founded 1933) – a full-time, year-round LORT – AEA resident repertory company located in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia, is seeking a full-time, year-round Technical Director. Responsibilities include: the construction, installation, and strike of all scenic elements in two spaces—a 507 seat proscenium theatre, and a 167 seat thrust stage; supervise a staff of 4 carpenters, 2 scenic artists, and 1 or more interns; communicate and coordinate with other department heads to effectively and safely implement strikes/changeovers; attend production meetings. Must have excellent organizational and communication skills; be able to create and work within a budget; motivate and manage staff; excellent carpentry skills; creative problem solver. The ideal candidate will have a degree in technical theatre as well as previous experience as a TD or ATD.

STAGE CARPENTER
The Stage Carpenter’s primary responsibility is changing the scenery between shows that rep. This employee is the supervisor of all crew personnel involved in the rep, and for leading this process in a safe and efficient manner. During pre-show, performance, and post performance this employee works in conjunction with stage management under the supervision of the Stage Manager overseeing the show to coordinate the maintenance, smooth and safe operation, and the appearance of the scenery and props. During this time the Stage Carpenter can also be responsible for cleaning the stage areas and assisting stage management with any of the day-to-day show operation as outlined by the Stage Manager. The Stage Carpenter’s schedule and responsibilities are coordinated with stage management through the supervision of the Technical Director. When no shows are in performance and/or the above responsibilities are not required of the Stage Carpenter the employee will perform whatever duties or tasks assigned by the Technical Director.

PROPS INTERN
The Barter Theatre's Props Department is looking for a year round intern for the 2009 season which consists of 24 shows in tow different spaces performed in repertory style. Responsibilities include assisting in the pulling, building and purchasing of props, constructing props using a wide variety of materials and techniques, participation in the load over and strike of all productions, assisting in the cleaning and maintenance, and organization of the properties inventory. Applicants must have a good attitude, a willingness to learn and creative problem solving skills. A familiarity with basic construction skills and tools is a must. This job may require heavy lifting, bending, climbing, prolonged standing, and some contact with hazardous materials.
