Assistant Technical Director
Barter Theatre (founded 1933) a full-time, year-round AEA resident repertory company of theatre artists, a founding member of LORT and located in the mountains of southwest Virginia, is seeking a qualified candidate for a full-time year-round position of Assistant Technical Director (ATD).
ATD will work in close association with Barter’s Technical Director; duties include the supervision of construction, assembly, installation, maintenance and disposal of all scenic elements; tracking of daily inventory and supplies; oversee maintenance and upkeep of the scene shop including tools, equipment, and facilities; supervise and train all shop personnel and crews for builds, load-ins and strikes; track budgets and materials; primary responsibility for shows and projects as assigned; and most importantly, operate Barter’s scene shop in a safe and efficient manner. Direct supervisor is Barter’s Technical Director.

Development Associate
Barter Theatre has re-opened the position of Development Associate and is currently accepting applications through Tuesday, August 31. If you submitted your application materials for this position last month, you do not need to resubmit your materials again in order to be considered.
Barter Theatre (founded 1933) – a full-time, year-round LORT/AEA resident repertory company located in the mountains of Southwestern Virginia – is seeking an experienced Development Associate for full-time employment beginning immediately.
The Development Associate will report directly to the Director of Development and assists with all aspects of generating contributed income including, but not limited to, grant writing and coordination; special event creation, planning, implementation and follow-up; identifying, researching, cultivating and soliciting individual and corporate prospect; creating written correspondence; communicating closely with volunteers and board members and maintaining accurate records. The Development Associate will attain an overall comprehension of Barter Theatre and its mission, history and operation. The successful candidate will have applicable work experience, excellent communication and follow up skills, have knowledge of this region, and be able to work independently and as a member of a dynamic team.

Director of Marketing
Barter Theatre (founded 1933) – a full-time, year-round AEA resident repertory company of theatre artists, a founding member of LORT – located in historic Abingdon, Virginia, is seeking an experienced Director of Marketing for fulltime
employment beginning fall 2010.
Must be skilled in strategic planning, branding, and audience development; energetic professional with strong leadership skills and a “hands-on” team work ethic. Responsibilities include planning and implementation of a comprehensive marketing plan integral to the financial success of Barter Theatre. The director oversees all marketing efforts to cultivate and retain an annual audience of 160,000+. Proficiency in computer and electronic media a must; skills in video and other graphic media useful, candidate must be familiar with Adobe Creative Suite software and video editing programs like Final Cut Pro. The director works closely with Barter’s producing artistic director, the directors of advancement, development and sales and service. Requires proven direct marketing and advertising skills, demographic analysis, marketing research and strong knowledge of design and production for print, web and video.

It’s a Wonderful Life Auditions at Barter Theatre

Barter Theatre is holding auditions for boys and girls aged 7 – 14 for the following roles in It’s a Wonderful Life:
- Young George Bailey / oldest Bailey – Age 12
- Young Mary / 2nd oldest Bailey – Age 11
- Young Joe / 3rd oldest Bailey – Age 10
- Violet / youngest Bailey – Age 8 or 9
(Actors need not be the age of the character, but should look age appropriate and be no taller than 5 feet.)
Interested? Here’s what you should do!
Before The Audition
• Prepare a song no longer than thirty seconds and a monologue no longer than a minute for the audition.
For the Audition
• Arrive promptly at Barter Theatre at 10 a.m. and be prepared to stay the entire time.
• Bring sheet music with you to the audition. You may not sing without music. An accompanist will be provided.
• You may be asked to read from a script that we provide as part of your audition.
Rehearsals for the show begin October 12 and run until November 19 when the show opens. The show runs until December 26, but not on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Rehearsals will be primarily after school, and we are seeking doubles for some roles.

Barter holds auditions in New York each year through Paul Russell Casting and is in attendance at UPTA in Memphis every February. Depending on the year and the roles we are seeking, we may also be at auditions in Washington DC, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Asheville, and area universities.
